Fujiwara no Kinto, a poet of the middle Heian Period (794-1185 CE), selected thirty-six noted poets who were active between the Jodai period to the first half of the early middle period. These poets went on to be referred to as the 'thirty-six immortals of poetry.' An image depicting these thirty-six masters frequently appears in pictorial works.

This folding screen is believed to date to the late Edo Period (1603-1868 CE). The brush work suggests that it was painted by a practitioner of the Kano school. The base of the folding screen has been restored, but the cutout piece is original.

Moreover, the Kokin Wakashu Picture Scroll is configured to be 36 meters in length, inspired by the 'thirty-six immortals of poetry.' Between the 18-meter long first and second halves is a folding screen depicting the thirty-six immortals of poetry.
