Here we discuss two waka poems.

1st poem:

Explanation: Heavenly wind, blow into the path through which clouds pass and close it. Let these maidens stay in their celestial form a bit longer.

Analysis: This waka poem likens the female dancers appearing at the imperial court to celestial maidens.

2nd poem:

Explanation: 'Who does this 'shiratama' belong to?' I ask, but everyone professes ignorance. If that is the case, I consider the girls all charming.

Analysis: The young nobleman Minamoto no Toru finds a 'shiratama' (euphemism for a pearl) that served as a hair ornament for one of the young dancers. He asks after its owner, but the youthful dancers feign ignorance. He retorts with a joke, saying, 'If that is the case, I consider you all my lovers.'

Pay close attention to this scene, which is based on these two poems. One of the dancers has a broken hair ornament. Precisely between the dancer and Minamoto no Toru are two pearls.
