In 905, by a decree of Emperor Daigo, Ki no Tomonori, Ki no Tsurayuki, Oshikochi no Mitsune, and Mibu no Tadamine were appointed to compile the Kokin Wakashu.
After the imperial capital was moved to Heian-kyo in Kyoto, Japanese culture became preoccupied with the Chinese style, and Chinese poetry dominated the waka form. However, in the late 9th century, work by Ariwara no Narihira, Ono no Komachi, the Buddhist priest Henjo, et al led to waka being reappraised as a form worthy of being used at official events of the imperial court. In the midst of these trends, the decisive factor that cemented waka's position was the compilation of the Kokin Wakashu.
The Kokin Wakashu consists of 20 volumes in total, with 1,111 poems that are categorized according to topic, such as the seasons (spring, summer, fall, and winter), love, and miscellaneous subjects.
The Kokin Wakashu Picture Scroll takes one of the more noteworthy waka poems from the collection of the same name and depicts the unique waka aesthetic using kana syllabary writing and the Yamato-e pictorial style. The image and the explanatory text in front of the mural were prepared by Shin Nishida (who leads the Kyoto Classical Art Research Group under the pseudonym Uruusai).
