A range of poets emerged around the pre-war magazine Araragi. After Japan's defeat in WWII, a 'Second Wave of Art' was espoused as a new theory, and this was later followed by the post-war school of poetry led by Miya Shuji and Kondo Yoshimi. Avant-garde tanka poets like Nakajo Fumiko and Terayama Shuji suddenly burst on the scene like a comet, among them others like Tsukamoto Kunio and Okai Takashi, leading to new developments in the contemporary tanka form.

Exhibit supervisor Tadao Shimazu acknowledged that Tsukamoto Kunio et al were standout examples of contemporary poets, but deliberately chose to focus on Saito Mokichi here, who is from a generation before. (*Panel created in 1993)
