ここでは、19世紀末から20世紀前半の明治・大正期を近代とします。明治20年代の終わり頃から、和歌は急激な変革を遂げ、近代短歌として開花しました。舞台となったのは、与謝野鉄幹の雑誌「明星」、正岡子規の根岸短歌会、佐佐木信綱の竹柏会、伊藤佐千夫の「アララギ」などがあります。

島津忠夫氏は、「『みだれ髪』の歌風は、鉄幹によって引き出されたともいえるし、当時の近代詩の模倣というべき点も見られるが、『みだれ髪』の特色によって、歌壇を動かし、短歌を新しい詩として蘇らせたことの意義はまことに大きい」と評しています。

The modern period spans from the end of the 19th century to the first half of the 20th century, and corresponds to the Meiji period (1868-1912) and Taisho period (1912-1926) From the end of the 1880s, waka underwent rapid transformation, emerging anew in the modern tanka form.
This emerged out of Yosano Tekkan's 'Myojo' magazine, with Masaoka Shiki's Negishi Tanka Kai, Sasaki Nobutsuna's Chikuhaku Kai, and Ito Sachio's Araragi serving as influential poetry circles.

Born in 1848 and died in 1942. Her husband was Yosano Tekkan. Known for poetry collections such as Midaregami.
Tadao Shimazu states, ''The style of poetry in 'Midaregami' could be said to have been developed through the influence of Tekkan, and it shows some characteristics that could be called an imitation of modern poetry of the time, but it cannot be understated how 'Midaregami' was unique in mobilizing the poetry world and reinventing the tanka as a new form of poetry.''

Explanation: On a moonlit night with cherry blossoms in full bloom, I pass by Gion en route to Kiyomizu, and everyone I meet on the way seems beautiful.
