The early modern period was a 100-year span approximately aligning with the 17th century. Among the Tosho poetry circle of high-ranking court nobles, Emperor Go Mizuno and Emperor Reigen played a pivotal role, with the Kokin Denju method being passed down among nobility at the imperial palace, leading it to be called Gosho Denju at times. By contrast, Matsunaga Teitoku led the Jige school of poetry among lower class nobles.
The work of Kinoshita Choshoshi, the nephew of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, garnered him considerable influence in Edo poetry circles for its freeform style.
