The late Middle Ages is a period of 300 years spanning from the 14th to 16th century. Following the death of Fujiwara No Teika's child, Fujiwara no Tameie, the three poets of the family split off into distinct families, and waka poetry became inevitably embroiled in political affairs, such as the standoff for the imperial throne between the descendants of the Daikakuji and Jimyoin lineage, as well was confrontations between samurai clans.
Some noted poets of this era include Kyogoku Tamekane, Ton'a, Shotetsu, and Sanjonishi Sanetaka, but true to the focus of Kokin Denju no Sato, we explore the work of To Tsuneyori here.
■ Person featured on panel: To Tsuneyori
His date of birth is unknown. He died around 1484. He was the 9th generation heir of the To family, which had ruled their domain from the Kamakura Period (1185-1333 CE) to the Muromachi Period (1333-1573 CE). Tsuneyori was a member of a samurai family with a taste for waka poetry, so he penned his own verses. In his later years, he was trained in the Kokin Denju arts by Gyoko.
■ Signature poem
Explanation: Being in eastern Japan, I miss Kyoto so much that I find myself gazing at the moon each night.
*This poem was penned during his stay of ten years in the Kanto region, where he was sent by a decree from Ashikaga Yoshimasa, the 8th shogun leader of the Muromachi shogunate, in order to quell the Kyotoku incident.
