The early Middle Ages is the 100-year span of the 13th century, corresponding to the creation of the Shin Kokin Wakashu and the years thereafter. It was an era graced with many excellent poets such as Fujiwara No Yoshitsune and Fujiwara no Ietaka, who excelled at the Shinkokin style, which featured captivating and lingering phrases. The central figure in this movement, who would go on to leave an indelible influence on the history of the waka form, was Fujiwara no Teika.
