The early middle period is a period of about 200 years spanning from the 9th to 10th century. After Japan's capital was relocated to Heian-kyo (in present-day Kyoto), the waka form was overshadowed by Chinese poetry styles, but in the latter 9th century, the work of the 'six immortals of poetry,' among them Ariwara no Narihira and Ono no Komachi, reinstated waka to a position that held its own against Chinese poetry.

In the midst of these changes, in 905, Emperor Daigo ordered Ki no Tsurayuki, Ki no Tomonori, Oshikochi no Mitsune, and Mibu no Tadamine to compile the Kokin Wakashu. The creation of this anthology cemented waka's position as an unshakeable staple of imperial court society.

■ Person featured on panel: Ki no Tsurayuki

His birthdate is unknown, but he is held to have died in the year 945 or 946.
Since the creation of the Kokin Wakashu anthology, it has retained a position as one of the most important pieces of classical literature, and Ki no Tsurayuki, one of its compilers, has also been held in high esteem. One of the prefaces to the Kokin Wakashu, written in the kana syllabary by Tsurayuki, is prized today as Japan's first full-fledged essay on tanka poetry.

■ Signature poem

Explanation: The wind blowing beneath the cherry trees may not be cold, but there is nonetheless a 'blizzard' of falling cherry blossoms unbeknownst to the sky.
