The museum is dedicated to the exploration of waka poetry spanning from classical waka to modern tanka.

The first exhibit is a set of informational panels describing an overview of the history of waka. They span 10 distinct periods from ancient times to the present, introducing the evolution of waka literature over this period of time. The informational panels are divided into a first and second half.

The first half encompasses the work of Kakinomoto no Hitomaro, the first figure appearing in the exhibit, and then concludes with the work of Fujiwara No Teika. The latter half begins with the work of To Tsuneyori, and starts at the back of the second floor.

Each panel consists of a front and back piece. The front piece features a portrait of a leading poet of that era and a sample of the poet's work. The reverse side gives some context on the historical era in which that person lived.

The creation of these panels was supervised by Tadao Shimazu, a scholar of Japanese literature and emeritus professor at Osaka University.

*QR codes can be found on the reverse side of the panels. You can scan the QR codes for further information about the poets and poetry that typified that era.
