■ The Waka Literature Museum explained

On the grounds of the Kokin Denju no Sato Field Museum you will find the former residence of the To family, a feudal clan that ruled from the Kamakura Period (1185-1333 CE) to the Muromachi Period (1333-1573 CE). Many historical sites dotting the area can be traced back to the To family. Despite being samurai warriors, the To clan produced many poets. Notable is ninth generation heir To Tsuneyori, who put his name down forever in Japanese literary history with the creation of the Kokin Denju collection of poetry.

The Kokin Denju Field no Sato Field Museum opened in 1993 as a site to exhibit work on the theme of waka poetry.

The Waka Literature Museum is a site within it that is dedicated specifically to exhibitions. Its collection includes not only work from the Kokin Wakashu, but a wide range of poetry spanning from ancient waka to modern-day tanka forms.

■ Highlights of the Waka Literature Museum

The hall features informational panels describing the history of waka literature from ancient times to the present, as well as a 36-meter wide mural entitled 'Kokin Wakashu Picture Scroll.'

Special exhibitions are also held on the 2nd floor from time to time. (If no special exhibition is currently scheduled, the 2nd floor is used to exhibit vertical 'tanzaku' poem cards with words penned by famous poets from the modern and contemporary period.)
