『東氏8代目・氏数（うじかず）』が領主だった頃のことです。『常縁』の和歌の友人だった武将・斉藤妙椿（さいとうみょうちん）が、応仁の乱（1467～1478年）で敵対関係になり、『東氏』の領地に侵攻。『氏数』は敗れ、『篠脇城』を奪われてしまいました。その知らせを出陣先の関東で聞いた『常縁』は悲しみ、歌を詠みます。「あるがうちにかかる世をしも見たりけり人の昔の猶も恋しき（※）」（『鎌倉大草紙』より）。それを伝え聞いた妙椿は、「歌を詠んでくれたら返してもいい」という素振りを見せ、『常縁』はたちどころに十首の歌を詠んで妙椿へ送りました。十首に込められた『常縁』の心情に心を打たれた妙椿は、返歌とともに『篠脇城』を返還しました。血を一滴も流さずに城を取り戻したこのエピソードを、人々は「和歌の功徳」と褒め称え、後世へと語り継いでいきました。

Around the time of the eighth Tō Clan leader, Ujikazu, the military commander Saitō Myōchin, who had been a friend of Tsuneyori through waka poetry, turned hostile during the Ōnin War (1467-1478) and invaded the territory of the Tō Clan. Ujikazu was defeated, and Shinowaki Castle was taken.
In response, Tsuneyori wrote the following poem:
Oh, what a world
I have seen in my lifetime
A person’s past
Feels all the more dear.

Upon having these words relayed to him, Myōchin suggested that if the Tō Clan composed some poetry, they might be able to return to their lands. Tsuneyori composed ten linked poems about his love for his land. It is said that Myōchin was so moved by the sentiments of Tsuneyori that he returned Shinowaki Castle to the Tō Clan. The moment has since become a legend and people have praised this event, in which a castle was returned without a single drop of blood, as a virtuous act of waka poetry
