『古今和歌集』とは、平安時代前期に醍醐天皇が命じてつくらせた、日本最初の“勅撰和歌集”です。作品の収集・選別には、紀貫之（きのつらゆき）をはじめとする高名な歌人があたり、全20巻に約1100首が収められました。『万葉集』が編集者不明で作品・作者のレベルも様々だったことに対して、『古今和歌集』は名歌人が作品を厳選し、最終的に天皇がお墨付きを与えた優れた和歌の集大成。当時、文学の王だった「漢詩（からうた）」に対するライバル心もあったのでしょう。そのころ主流であった「漢詩」に対して、日本独自の詩である「和歌（やまとうた）」の「古今（いにしえ・いま）」の作品を「集」めて、和歌を日本固有の文学として意識的に確立しようとしたのが『古今和歌集』だったのです。
The Kokin Wakashū (A Collection of Poems Ancient and Modern) was compiled at the order of Emperor Daigo in the early Heian period (794-1185) and is Japan's first chokusen wakashū (imperially commissioned Japanese anthology of waka poetry). The collection and arrangement of the works were performed by famous poets, led by Ki no Tsurayuki, and about 1,100 poems were collected in 20 volumes. In contrast to the diverse class statuses of the authors of the Man'yōshū, whose editor remains unknown, the Kokin Wakashū is a compilation of outstanding waka poetry carefully selected by famous poets and ultimately endorsed by the Emperor. In those days, classical Chinese held great importance in the court, akin to the status of Latin or Ancient Greek in medieval or early modern Europe. The Kokin Wakashū, however, is a collection of poetry in kana, in Japanese, as opposed to classical Chinese. Though there are some allusions to Chinese poetry, and there is a classical Chinese postface, it's clear that there is an emphasis on poetry in Japanese, rather than classical Chinese.
