豊かな森に囲まれた『東氏館跡庭園』。園内には梅、桜、桂、もみじなどの和歌で詠まれた木々が植えられ、色や香りで季節の移り変わりを教えてくれます。それらの多彩な樹木の中で、『古今和歌集』で最も多く詠まれたのは「桜」。明建神社の横参道には約100本の桜が植えられ、春に現れる“桜のトンネル”は感動的です。また、秋は山々が緑、黄、橙、赤とカラフルに染まる紅葉の名所。『東常縁』も『宗祇』と別れる際、旅立ちを祝って「もみじ葉の流るる竜田白雲の花のみ吉野思ひ忘るな（※）」と詠んだと伝えられています。『東氏館跡庭園』を包む豊かな自然の中を散策しながら、和歌の世界に浸ってみてはいかがでしょうか。

The Tō Clan Manor Ruins and Garden are surrounded by an abundant forest. Growing in the garden are all kinds of trees that have been the subject of waka poetry compositions, such as plum, cherry, katsura, and maple. The trees reflect the changing of the seasons through their color and scent.
Among these many trees, the one most often composed about in the Kokin Wakashū is the cherry. Around one hundred cherry trees grow along the side approach to Myōken Shrine. The cherry blossom tunnel that appears in spring is beautiful. The area is also famous for its autumn foliage, which dyes the mountains in shades of green, yellow, orange, and red.
When Sōgi left Yamatochō, Tō no Tsuneyori composed the following poem:
The maple leaves
Flow on Tatsuta River
Like white clouds
Of blossoms on Yoshino Mountain
Do not forget these feelings!
One possible meaning of this poem is that Tsuneyori is calling on Sōgi not to forget the teachings of the Kokin Denju even after they part ways.
